YerbaMate  Questions and Answers:

Q: What is yerba mate?

A: Yerba mate is a traditional infusion (tea beverage) original to Latin America. Native traditions refer to it as a beverage of the gods, claiming that the agricultural and curing methods used to harvest and prepare yerba mate were heaven sent. The infusion was prepared from the leaves of the Mate tree, a native to the canopy of the tropical rain forests of northeastern Argentina, eastern Paraguay and southern Brazil. The leaves, or Yerba, were placed into a gourd, or Mate, where hot water was added. The infusion was consumed through a traditional straw called a Bombilla that naturally strains the herb.

Q: Are both yerba mate brands certified organic?

A: Both Wisdom of the Ancients and La Merced brands of yerbamate in tea bag and loose forms are certified organic. Additionally, they are cultivated according to traditional methods by those who respect their heritage and honor their environment.

Q: Does yerba mate contain caffeine?

A: Yes, yerbamate has caffeine; however, the amount is quite small. Twelve ounces of a 4:1 concentrated instant, powdered extract of Wisdom of the Ancients Yerba Mate Royale only has about 18mg of caffeine. Compare that with a can of cola at about 45mg or twelve ounces of tea at 69mg or brewed coffee at 137mg. A typical tea bag of yerba mate contains less than 5mg of caffeine. Also, drinkers of yerba mate do not experience the same side effects, such as nervousness and jitters, which are associated with caffeinated soft drinks, coffee, tea or the many caffeine-containing headache medicines.
Recent studies have compared yerba mate with known caffeine-containing herbal extracts, such as black tea, green tea, coffee and guaran. Yerba mate was the only stimulating beverage that lowered the heart rate and did not change blood pressure levels after consumption. That is the opposite effect that caffeine has been shown to have on the body.

Q: What are the nutritional benefits of yerba mate?

A: While generally consumed as a stimulating beverage, yerba mate contains 196 nutritional compounds including many vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants. Yerba mate is especially rich in the B-complex vitamins, which adds to its effectiveness as a stimulating beverage.

Q: Is yerba mate low carb?

A: Yes. Yerba mate is naturally very low in carbohydrate content. Four carbohydrates have been identified in yerba mate in trace amounts--sucrose, raffinose, glucose and levulose. However, a typical serving of yerbamate contains only 13 mg of carbohydrates. According to the FDA, any food with less than 1000mg or 1 gram of carbs can be listed as having no carbs.

Q: How can drinking yerba mate benefit my low carb diet?

A: Yerba mate is an essential component to your low carb diet. Generally, low carb dieters do not get enough antioxidants to prevent debilitating illnesses such as atherosclerosis. Yerba mate is especially high in antioxidants. Yerba mate has twice as many antioxidants as green tea.
If you exercise regularly and follow a low carb diet, the benefits of drinking yerba mate greatly increase. Yerba mate has been shown to lower the respiratory quotient.

Q: Can I drink yerba mate while exercising?

A: Yes. In fact, we recommend it. In a recent study, yerba mate was shown to lower heart rate and have no effect on blood pressure. Combine that information with its naturally low caffeine content and high nutrition content and yerba mate is an effective pre-workout energy beverage or post-workout recovery drink.

Q: Is yerba mate safe to drink during pregnancy?

A: Yerbamate is widely consumed throughout Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay by women during pregnancy but we recommend consulting a physician prior to beginning use of any herbal product.

Q: If I am taking prescription of over-the-counter medications will there be any interactions between your herbal products and the medications I am taking?

A: No interactions have been reported. World wide, millions of people use the herbs in these products daily. However, we are not able to offer medical advice. We recommend that you consult with your health care professional concerning all questions on possible interactions between drugs and herbs.

YerbaMate:  Nature's Premier Energy Beverage

One of the safest and most effective herbs for increasing energy and melting away excess pounds is YerbaMate.

The native Guarani of Paraguay used this ancient infusion for centuries to give them energy, stamina and vitality.

Although consumed in Europe since the 1600s, Mate remained virtually unknown in the United States.  In 1982, Jim May, founder of Wisdom of the Ancients, introduced Mate and the knowledge of its healing benefits to North America.

Now, more than twenty years later, the Guarani still harvest, cure and package Mate, according to their traditional, time-honored, methods for Wisdom of the Ancients.

Mate contains many nutrients, vitamins and minerals essential in the destruction of free radicals.  Free radicals assist in tissue damage, contribute to pathological disorders, such as diabetes and atherosclerosis, and oxidize low-density lipoproteins.

The flavonoids and polyphenols in Mate inhibit low-density lipoprotein oxidation, thus, reducing "bad: cholesterol levels.  Furthermore, Mate contains almost three times the polyphenols as green tea and its ability to destroy free radicals is twice as high.

When comparing the most prominent antioxidant herbals, including guarana, ephedra, and green tea, only Mate demonstrated significantly decreased respiratory quotient meaning that it burned more fat than normal.  More importantly Mate did not show adverse effects on blood pressure or heart rate response.

The key to losing fat is burning more calories than we eat.  Mate may stimulate the release of serotonin, which signals the frontal cortex of brain to turn off hunger pangs.  Those people who have trouble overeating generally have been found to also have abnormal levels of serotonin in the blood.  Also because of its high nutrient content Mate makes you feel full faster, thus you eat less.

The human body was meant to move.  The more we move, the more calories we burn.  Whether we exercise moderately or with high intensity, the long-term weight loss results are the same.  Shortly after drinking Mate, you will have so much energy and vitality that you will feel like walking running, cycling or just completing those arduous chores around the house after a long day at the office.

Simply put, Mate is a total nutrition beverage.  In addition to the polyphenols, flavonoid and sterols essential for weight loss, Mate also contains a litany of vital nutrients including:

  *    Amino acids: arginine, aspartic acid, cystine, glutamac acid, histidine, leucine and isoleucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalinine, threonine, tryptophan tyroisine, and valine.
  *   Vitamins: beta carotene (A), thiamin (B-1), riboflavin (B-2), niacin (B-3), choline (B-4), pantothenic acid (B-5), pyridoxine (B-6), inositol (B-8), folic acid (B-9).cobalamin (B-12), ascorbic acid (C), Vitamin D, and Vitamin E.
  *   Minerals: calcium chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, potassium, and zinc.

These nutrients occur naturally, act synergistically and are completely bioavailable.

For maximum results, drink Wisdom of the Ancients Yerba Mate Royale.
